The Garden of Growth

by Ellen Fogarty with ReadyKids!

“Collaboration means coming together with others to create something meaningful. My Luna Collaboration project is a partnership with Readykids!, a Florida nonprofit dedicated to helping preschoolers develop confidence by being prepared for Kindergarten and beyond. Through weekly mentoring during the school year, volunteers work one on one with children, building early literacy through recognition of numbers, letters, shapes, and colors by playing games, reading books, and role playing. Just as important, these visits nurture confidence, and self-awareness, while reinforcing a love of learning. This mission is deeply personal to me, as I have volunteered for years with ReadyKids! at Holm Elementary School in Pensacola, Florida.

From this shared spirit, “The Garden of Growth” blossomed. Four- and five- year-olds, with their mentors watching, created a joyful garden filled with flowers, butterflies, birds, a rabbit, and a shining sun. The children imagined and crafted every element without prompts or reference images. My role was simply to guide gently and provide a soft, supportive background that allowed their freedom, wonder, and authenticity to become the heart of the painting.

Artists have collaborated for centuries, and this project continues with that tradition in the most heartfelt way. By uniting the imagination of many young children, a vibrant and expressive piece emerged, one that celebrates individuality and joy over perfection. Just as flowers bloom in endless shapes and colors in nature, they bloom in “The Garden of Growth”. Ready Kids! reminds us that through volunteer commitment, time, and care children grow a strong foundation for lifelong learning.”
