Landslide

by Halle Castille and Chloe Bailey

Landslide is a collaborative painting between two local Pensacola artists, Halle Castille and Chloe Bailey. The original concept and sketches were developed by Halle Castille, inspired in part by the song “Landslide” by Fleetwood Mac, specifically the lyrics, “I saw my reflection in the snow covered hills and the landslide brought me down.” The song’s overall themes on change, self-reflection, and emotional reckoning became the foundation for this piece.

Chloe Bailey painted the majority of the landscape, establishing the river, hills, and atmosphere that frame the scene. Her painterly approach created a sense of stillness and depth, forming an environment that feels both expansive and contemplative. The winding river and open sky suggest movement and time, while the quiet solitude of the figure introduces a space for introspection.

Halle Castille then entered the work again, approaching the mountain with a more sculptural sensibility, effectively “carving” into the mountain- side. Through subtle shifts of light, shadow, and structure, a side profile is revealed from within it. This intervention transforms the mountain from a natural form into something deeply human.

The composition as a whole invites a gradual act of recognition. What first appears as a single solitary figure within a vast landscape slowly transforms, suggesting reflection, identity, and the layered nature of perception. The embedded face blurs the boundary between environment and psyche, echoing the song’s themes of confronting oneself within shifting emotional terrain.

Created for National Women’s Month, this work celebrates shared vision, artistic dialogue, and the power of female collaboration.
