Cascading Possibilities
by Lisa Joy Newcomb and Jan Hoffmann
“Cascading Possibilities,” represents collaboration not as a fixed plan, but a process of becoming that is shaped by curiosity, responsiveness, and mutual respect. Painter Jan Hoffmann and photographer Lisa Joy Newcomb entered this collaboration from distinct practices, discovering through dialogue that their work could intersect in unexpected and generative ways.
Together, the artists engaged in a process of transformation. Hoffmann offered paintings that could withstand physical interaction, while Newcomb brought an archive of collected glass and a photographic practice rooted in assemblage and close observation. The studio became a site of continual movement: glass shifted across painted surfaces, compositions were built and dismantled, and the camera acted as a tool for discovery rather than documentation. Hundreds of photo- graphs were taken in the exploration process. Post photographing several of the images were then explored in editing to push and pull the colors so that there was strength and harmony in their interaction.
Many variations were explored, with momentum building through repetition and refinement. The final work emerged through shared selection, conversation, and intuition.
Visually, the image mirrors this unfolding collaboration. Cascading lines, layered color, and luminous surfaces create a sense of motion and cohesion, suggesting a dance between materials and sensibilities. The work feels fluid yet intentional, dynamic yet balanced.
Cascading Possibilities ultimately speaks to the transformative nature of creative partnership. By opening themselves to collaboration, Hoffmann and Newcomb discovered a unified expression that honors process, shared energy, and profound potential that emerges when artists create together.
