Current Possibilities
by Lisa Joy Newcomb, Jan Hoffmann, and Anita Vasquez
“Current Possibilities,” is a three-way collaboration between fused glass artist Anita Vasquez, painter Jan Hoffmann, and photographer Lisa Joy Newcomb, rooted in the desire to create a single, unified image through collective exploration. Together, the artists committed to a process of transformation that allowed materials, composition, and authorship to remain fluid throughout.
The collaboration developed through layered interactions: studio visits, coffee shop meetings, shared material selection, and sustained communication across FaceTime, texts, and phone calls. Vasquez’s fused glass which was specifically a remnant from a larger sheet was chosen for its expressive texture and adaptability. Hoffmann’s cool hued abstract paintings on wood, offered both visual depth and physical stability, making it possible for glass elements to be repositioned repeatedly. This flexibility became essential to the work’s evolution.
Glass fragments were moved across painted surfaces again and again, assembled and dismantled in search of resonance. The camera served as an investigative tool, capturing hundreds of variations. In editing, color was intentionally pushed and pulled so that the painting and glass spoke a shared chromatic language, further dissolving their separateness.
The title, “Current Possibilities,” reflects both the immediacy of the collaborative moment and the influence of water as a defining presence, informed by all three artists living near the dynamic Gulf.
Ultimately, the work embodies the power of collaboration to generate momentum. Through shared intuition and sustained dialogue, the artists created an image that feels dynamic, cohesive, and alive that is an expression of what becomes possible when creative currents meet.
